recent interests explores landscape, existential thought, and possible connections between south and the west paradigms. Through sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, and video, I gather and reinterpret narratives and belief systems, translating them into material and spatial forms. I often work with found and discarded objects, which, when placed in relation to other materials, create a dialogue between shared meanings and personal experience.
lives and works in Zurich, having relocated from Santiago de Chile to Berlin in 2015. His work has been exhibited internationally, including Switzerland, Chile, Argentina, Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria, and Finland.
“Zabalaga’s work encapsulates a series of components that move on different lucidative levels.
Those levels intervene the final materiality of the piec- es, but also, above all, the setting to produce feelings.
On one hand, we have the spatial element that, in his proposals, is mainly shown through infrastructural elements, spaces that, unlike natural spaces, contain human intervention and reveal the factor of fleetingness.
The approach to these enclosures –which are usually cracked–, set up lots of textual lines. Thus, questions related to physical changes within our reality arise, such as the topic of alienating the subject be- fore puzzling places and displaced functionalities, the recreation of states of mind and experiential recollections.”
